SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research verwelkomt per 1 oktober 2016 een nieuw lid in de directie: dr. Remco den Besten. Als Managing Director tekent Den Besten voor het management van het instituut en voor het vertalen van de wetenschappelijke koers van SRON in een uitvoerbaar instituutsprogramma. Remco den Besten volgt Roel Gathier op, die deze functie tot diens vroegtijdige overlijden in maart 2016 vervulde. Den Besten is gepromoveerd scheikundige en was sinds eind 2011 verbonden aan telecommunicatiespecialist Stratix. Daarvoor was hij bijna tien jaar lid van de directie van het KNMI in De Bilt. Voor zijn KNMI-periode was hij directielid van het huidige Agentschap Telecom in Groningen. Den Besten combineert jarenlange ervaring in hogere ambtelijke structuren bij de Rijksoverheid met ervaring in de inrichting van satelliet-, radio-, telecom- en meteorologische infrastructuren ten behoeve van maatschappelijke toepassingen. Een goede staat van dienst voor een Managing Director bij SRON.
Remco zal samen met Scientific Director en tevens algemeen directeur Rens Waters de directie van SRON vormen. Waters is primair verantwoordelijk voor het uitzetten van de wetenschappelijke koers en de kwaliteit van de wetenschappelijke en technologische programma’s van SRON. Als algemeen directeur is hij eindverantwoordelijk voor het instituut.
Waters en Den Besten zien uit naar een enthousiaste en bevlogen samenwerking.
Rens Waters: “Met Remco is de SRON directie weer compleet. Er liggen stevige uitdagingen en ik ben erg blij dat Remco zich gaat inzetten voor het instituut. Zijn ervaring is daarbij van grote waarde. Dat, én zijn aanstekelijk enthousiasme geven alle vertrouwen in een prettige samenwerking.”
Den Besten: “SRON biedt voor mij de uitdagende combinatie van grensverleggende kennis en techniek met een dynamische en complexe omgeving. Ik vind het een eer om samen met het instituut te werken aan een florissante toekomst en verheug me op de nieuwe ervaringen. Om samen het verschil te maken op terreinen waar anderen (nog) niet zijn geweest. Van die zoektocht krijg ik energie.”
SRON welcomes Remco den Besten to the directorate
SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research welcomes a new member of its directorate with effect from 1 October 2016: Dr. Remco den Besten. As Managing Director, Den Besten will be responsible for the management of the institute and for translating the scientific course of SRON into a realizable institute program.
Remco den Besten succeeds Roel Gathier, who fulfilled this position until his premature death in March 2016. Den Besten holds a doctorate in chemistry and since the end of 2011 he worked for telecommunication specialist Stratix. Prior to that he was a member of the board of directors of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) for ten years. Before his KNMI period he was a member of the board of directors of the current Radiocommunications Agency in Groningen. Den Besten combines years of experience in higher civil service structures with experience in setting up satellite, radio, telecom and meteorological infrastructures for societal use. This is a good track record for a Managing Director at SRON.
Together with Rens Waters, Scientific Director and also general director, Remco will form the directorate of SRON. Waters is primarily responsible for setting out the scientific course and quality of SRON’s scientific and technological program. As general director he bears overall responsibility for the institute. Waters and Den Besten look forward to an inspiring and enthusiastic collaboration.
