NWO-I heeft Michael Wise benoemd voor een tweede termijn van vijf jaar als directeur van SRON. Tijdens zijn eerste vijf jaar leidde Wise de verhuizing van het hoofdkantoor van Utrecht naar Leiden en kwamen meerdere ruimtemissies tot wasdom.
Zo staat het Nederlandse instrument SPEXone klaar om in februari te worden gelanceerd als onderdeel van NASA’s PACE klimaatsatelliet. Afgelopen augustus werd de XRISM röntgentelescoop gelanceerd met een door SRON ontwikkeld filterwiel. En rond de kerst wordt vanaf Antarctica NASA’s ballontelescoop GUSTO opgelaten, waarvoor SRON de camera’s heeft gemaakt.
Andere ruimtemissies hebben de afgelopen vijf jaar tijdens hun opstartfase vleugels gekregen. Zo kreeg de Nederlandse bijdrage voor zwaartekrachtdetector LISA een NWO roadmap-subsidie en doorliep ESA’s röntgentelescoop Athena de benodigde hervormingen. Voor exoplaneetjager PLATO heeft SRON een nieuwe ruimtesimulator gebouwd.
Nieuwe termijn
Wise kijkt uit naar zijn aanstaande nieuwe termijn. ‘Er liggen veel prachtige kansen in het verschiet. Ten eerste verhuist de afdeling Groningen binnen de Zernike campus naar een splinternieuw gebouw. En we verwachten de lancering van een aantal missies waaronder de exoplaneettelescopen PLATO en ARIEL en aardobservatiesatellieten zoals PACE. Zoals altijd zijn we ook al bezig met wat erna komt en met een aantal nieuwe mogelijke missies in ontwikkeling. Tegelijkertijd gaan we wetenschap bedrijven met de data vanuit de huidige en binnenkort gelanceerde missies.’
Enthousiasme

De afgelopen jaren brachten veel veranderingen met zich mee en daar heeft hij SRON op uitstekende wijze doorheen geloodst. Het bestuur van NWO-I heeft er alle vertrouwen in dat hij de nieuwe uitdagingen van de komende jaren op net zo’n wijze het hoofd zal weten te bieden.’
Michael Wise appointed for second term as SRON director
NWO-I has appointed Michael Wise for a second five-year term as director of SRON. During his first five years, Wise has led the relocation of SRON’s headquarters from Utrecht to Leiden and several space missions came to fruition.
Over the past five years, the Dutch space instrument SPEXone has developed from concept to being stand-by for launch this February as part of NASA’s PACE climate satellite. Last August, the XRISM X-ray telescope was launched including a filter wheel developed by SRON. And around Christmas time, NASA’s balloon telescope GUSTO will be launched from Antarctica, for which SRON has built the cameras.
Other space missions in their start-up phase have earned their wings during the past five years. For example, the Dutch contribution to the gravitational wave detector LISA received an NWO roadmap grant and ESA’s X-ray telescope Athena underwent the necessary reforms. For the exoplanet hunter PLATO, SRON has made a new space simulator.
New term
Wise is looking forward to his upcoming new term. ‘Many exciting opportunities lie ahead. First of all, our Groningen branch will be relocating across the Zernike Campus to a brand-new building. And we are expecting some missions to be launched including exoplanet telescopes PLATO and ARIEL and earth observation satellites such as the upcoming PACE mission. And as always, we’re thinking about what comes next with several new mission opportunities in development. All the while, we will be doing great science with the data from our current and incoming new missions.’
