SRON gives demonstrations at First LEGO League regional final Utrecht

Every year, the First LEGO League organizes an international competition for primary school children from groups 7 and 8 in which they team up to build a LEGO robot. This year’s theme is ‘Into Orbit’. SRON will be present at the regional final for the province of Utrecht.

The First LEGO League is a robot competition with 320,000 children taking part in 40,000 teams from 98 countries. Each team builds a LEGO robot, carrying out as many tasks as possible within one and a half minutes. In November and December, the regional finals take place in the Netherlands, in which teams can qualify for the Benelux final.

This year’s theme is ‘Into Orbit’. Therefore SRON will be present at the regional final for the province of Utrecht, on Friday November 30th in Amersfoort. The robots will perform several space-related tasks, such as cleaning up space waste or launching an object with a predetermined ‘escape velocity’. In between matches, SRON engineers Simon Rosman and Martin Grim will give demonstrations about infrared light and the mechanics and electronics behind SRON instrumentation.
