Space research in the Netherlands

Since the early 1960s, the Netherlands has been renowned in international scientific communities as a small country with great pioneers in scientific research in space.

Dutch research groups in Groningen, Utrecht and Leiden were involved in space missions by NASA and ESRO (later ESA) from the very beginning. The groups partly came together as early as 1961 in the Laboratory for Space Research (LRO) and merged in 1983 with Groningen to form Stichting Ruimte onderzoek Nederland, SRON.

Strong name in space science

SRON became a strong name in the international community for science with space instruments. Outside science, among the Dutch public, SRON’s significant role in international space research remained much less known.

Awareness and brand recognition

The new website more clearly reflects the rich scientific history of SRON and its predecessors. The new logo and house style, which we will implement on all platforms in the coming days and weeks, will ensure better recognition. The new name Space Research Organisation Netherlands replaces the sometimes confusing SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research, which SRON used since 2005.
